Psychodynamic Therapy

This therapy is also known as insight-orientated therapy. Through this

therapy, the person discovers his/her unconscious motivations, and this is

the key of this therapy because according to this theory your present problems have a root from some unresolved conflict or repressed trauma

from the past.

Once the person finds the root of the problem they can deal with it. The result of this work is that the person can make important

changes in his/her personality and behaviour.

Most psychologists will use psychodynamic theories alongside other therapies such as cognitive-behavioural technique.

Behaviour therapy

This therapy focuses on changing behaviours. Ivan Pavlov made great contributions to this therapy by discovering classical conditioning.

It involved placing a neutral signal before a naturally occurring reflex.

This theory assumes that we learn according to our interactions with the environment.

A clear example of that is how phobias can form. For example, if we have a bad experience with a dog that could lead us to create a phobia for dogs and every time we saw a dog we would feel fear,

anxiety, panic etc.

The idea of this therapy is that you can recreate behaviours with good results, so the person creates a new knowledge of the situation and the phobia disappears. Desensitizing is a clear

example of that.

Therapy formats

Over the phone: Phone calls can be a very good way to keep contact if you are a very busy person or would like privacy, if you need support at different times and at short notice, this could be the best way for you

Face to Face: This is the most popular way that counsellors work. You will meet your counsellor, maybe in their practice or in a cafe or any other place you wish to talk. Personally I believe that face to face is the best way, because you can express yourself not just with words but also with body language. Your therapist can help you to express your emotions in an easier way.

Face time or Skype: These systems can be very useful especially if you are very busy or you just feel more comfortable that way because it allows you to retain more privacy. I believe that it is a very good option when timetables must be adaptable

Family therapy: Sometimes family therapy is needed. Your therapist can do group therapy and also one to one with every member of the family.

You can decide how many sessions of counselling you want based upon how you feel progress is developing.

Every case is different, sometimes a few sessions maybe enough and for others continual therapy is needed. It is up to you to decide.

I can adapt to your timetables and needs.

How Does Counselling Work?

Relational Therapy

This type of therapy takes into account environmental and social factors

such as culture, gender, race.

Especially people who suffer from distress related to social relationships may benefit from this therapy because it focuses on helping the person to gain a better understanding of the way he or she builds a relationship and how significant relationships since childhood can affect he or her as a person. The aim is to develop better relationships.

How can counselling help

Counselling can help you to cope with various emotional issues such as : depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, eating disorders, sexual abuse, domestic violence and many others.

Counselling will give you the skills that you need to understand yourself better.

To ilustrate, the brain is like a drawer full of paper, sometimes  the papers become untidy , these papers could be unsolved problems,

worries, frustrations or memories.

As a result of this untidiness we can suffer anxiety, panic, sadness,

anger etc… Counselling can help you to organize everything in order to

have mental peace and you will be empowered to organized your own mind.

Common subjects that counselling and psychology can deal with:

Relationships

Your counsellor or psychologist should provide guidance, support and encouragement through any difficulties that you may be facing in any sort of relationship, such as: friendships, couples, parent _child. You will also find help if you are experiencing an abusive relationship.

Addictions

There is always a psychological root to an addiction. If you can modify or change the process of thought and get an understanding to the root of the problem, you will be able to beat the addiction.

Bullying

If you are a victim of bullying, you will get the right help through your counsellor to prevent or suppress any psychological damage that it can cause. In many cases just getting support to inform the correct authorities may be all that is needed however for others there will be a need to learn new coping strategies to deal with the situation. Therapy, will give you a safe place where you can express your emotions and worries, you will be listened, helped and supported at all times.

Illness

If you have health problems you may feel comforted by counselling. You can learn coping strategies and how to look after your mental health. I have worked for more than 10 years with patients some who have suffered terminal illnesses, such as cancer. We managed to developed specific skills that help the patients and their families to live in the best way.

Bereavement

If you have lost a loved one and have experience emotional problems because of this you may benefit from speaking with a counsellor or psychologist. They will help you get support through this difficult time, you should gain mechanisms of coping.

Mental health issues

Have you been diagnosed with a mental health issue such as, depression, psychosis, anxiety, bipolar disorder or any other? Do you feel that you are fighting on your own? You don’t need to fight on your own anymore, make contact with a counsellor/psychologist and they can help you through this process.

Trauma

Traumas can be caused by many things, for example sexual abuse, domestic violence, even an accident can cause such an impact in your mind that you can develop a trauma. Some traumas can last for a long time and they don’t allow the person to live with normality. Traumas can have such an impact on your life that you may feel that you are chained to a problem that remains with you day by day. You can find a way to move on through the help of your psychologist.

Low self-esteem

Low self-esteem can lead to problems like anxiety or depression. This is one of the most common problems in our society. This has caused many bad habits such as heavy drinking. Your counsellor can help you to challenge negative feelings that you have about yourself. You will be able to see things from a different perspective; you will gain the skills to be more positive about yourself.

What You Can Expect From Counselling.

During your work with your counsellor you will build a good relationship with him/her, and you should feel confident to freely express your feelings and worries. You will also establish a timetable for your counselling sessions. You should expect complete confidentiality from your counsellor.

Person Centred Therapy

This therapy was devised by Carl Rogers, an American psychologist.

The aim of this therapy is to empower the person to grow and to realize their

own strengths and weaknesses. This therapy relies on the bond created

between the therapist and the person. For that reason, the therapist

has to be genuine and not judgemental.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

This therapy is based on how your thoughts and beliefs affect your behaviour feelings.

You will gain coping skills for every difficulty

you experience.

Cognitive is related to what you think and behavioural is basically the way you behave. The psychologist will help the person to analyse their thoughts and why the person thinks in that way, if you change your thinking you can change the way you do things.
